Several days ago I posted about the current painting on my easel. It is the inaugural painting for a “Bird in a Gilded Cage” concept. I have been making slow progress on this one for a variety of reasons, most recently of which has been the unending rain. The sun finally reemerged on Saturday, but it took me a couple of days to get out of my funk and really make some progress on the painting.
As you can see, it has come a long way in the last week and a half, despite my rain-induced moodiness.
Setting Goals for the New Year
I thought I had written about setting goals for the new year in a previous post, but it appears to have been overlooked in my moody, uninspired moments and the rush to finish paintings for deadlines this week.
One of my goals for this year is to transition back to painting in oils. Acrylics have more flexibility as far as experimentation and mixed media applications, and dry much faster, but they lack the vibrancy and luminosity of oils. There’s also something about the smell of oils that makes a studio space feel more authentic to me.

Good luck with your art goals for this year! I was never a fan of oils, much prefer watercolour but I think that comes down to ease of use and cleaning for me, I am lazy and like things that don’t need much prep or dry time 😀 I do plan on getting my acrylics out this year because it was my goal for last year but never got round to it. I got some nice brushes for Christmas though so I have even fewer excuses not to go paint 😀

I understand Emma, but I think the cleaning process is part of what I like about working with oils. I like washing dishes and sweeping floors also, so it’s definitely a personality trait.
